Web Literacy

Definition:

"'Web Literacy' is defined as the ability to make critical use of the Web to access information, and to prepare documents and Web sites that make effective and appropriate use of this medium." - Dalhousie University

Standards:

WD.1 - Students will demonstrate and apply knowledge of internet technologies.
WD.1.1 Students will apply knowledge of the internet structure
WD.1.2 Students will apply knowledge of Internet Browsers
WD.1.3 Students will apply knowledge of Hypertext Markup Language

Objectives:

Students will recognize that web literacy is crucial in order to use the internet efficiently, safely, and productively.

Lessons:

• Students will know how to understand the language behind a URL, a web page, and its sources.
• Students will know why understanding the internet can/will protect their interests.
• Students will know why making prudent choices in regards to internet use/posting is critical to having a web identity that is appropriate in today’s work force.
• Students will be able to make educated choices regarding what information should be made public.
• Students will be able to use research tools both on the web and in databases to find the most accurate and useful information.
• Students will be able to determine the difference between personal and nonpersonal information.
• Students will be able to identify owners of specific web pages.
